off”: Cassirer’s Response to Frege and Russell

چکیده

This paper concerns the reception of the new logic and logicism of Frege and Russell among the German Neo-Kantian philosophers of the Marburg school. Paul Natorp and Ernst Cassirer both object to Frege’s and Russell’s conception of the ground, nature, and demarcation of logic. This objection depends on the distinctive Marburg school philosophy of logic, arst articulated by Hermann Cohen: that “formal” logic (in Kant’s sense) depends on a logical investigation of the principles that make mathematical natural science possible. Nevertheless, Cassirer thought that the new logic had profound philosophical implications. First, the new logic provides a technical vindication of some Neo-Kantian theses concerning space and time and mathematical proofs. Second, Cassirer thinks that the new logic allows for a conception of mathematics as the study of relational structures. This conception, in concert with a Kantian notion of objectivity and objecthood, makes possible a justiacation of modern mathematics.

Hintikka vs. Frege on the "logic of Being"

Frege is the real culprit, rather than Russell. Hintikka views his dispute with Frege as pertaining to "the logic of being" (a phrase apparently coined by him; cf 1979, end of section 10: "Game-theoretical semantics is thus much closer to Aristotle's views on the logic of being than is the received view [Frege's]", emphasis mine, but the theoretical and historiographical opposition to Frege con...

Russell’s Other Contradiction: the Paradox of Propositions

Appendix B of The Principles of Mathematics (1903) contains Russell’s first statement of his theory of logical types. This simple version of the theory is designed to block the reasoning that leads to the paradox of the Russell class. But Russell notes immediately that new problems arise. The problems culminate in the paradox of propositions. This is a problem that seems to run in exact paralle...

Tractarian objects and logical categories

It has been much debated whether the Tractarian objects are what Russell would have called particulars or whether they include also properties and relations. This paper claims that the debate is misguided: there is no logical category such that Wittgenstein intended the reader of the Tractatus to understand his objects either as providing examples of or as not providing examples of that categor...
